Re:        Leave Policy for Boarders

Dear Parents:

I request all parents to refer to the Student Handbook where the Leave Policy of TISB is mentioned.   It is essential that you as parents are aware of and support the leave policy of the school and adhere to the rules and regulations of the school.  I refer you to the Student Handbook:

  • Every student is expected to be present in school from the first day of each term to the last day of the term.
  • Students will not be granted leave while the school is in session.  Students will not be permitted to extend their holidays beyond those listed in the school calendar.
  • The following exemptions may be granted:
    • Death, life-threatening illness or accident to the immediate family (father, mother, brother, sister).
    • Student’s own serious illness, determined after consultation with the school doctor or family physician, as attested by written records.
    • Students taking competitive or entrance examinations.
    • Other emergencies, as granted by the Principal.
    • Serious ill health or death of a close family member.
    • To attend a public exam i.e. SAT, TOEFL, interview/exam for university/college entry.  In such events authentic documentation must be provided from the examining board/university.
    • Leave for the attendance of a marriage in the family is restricted to that of a direct sister or brother, and a direct aunt or uncle.  In such cases the student will be permitted 3 days leave only, which is to include travel.  Leave to attend the marriage of a cousin or other relation is not permitted.
    • Should extraordinary leave be granted by the Principal for the above, the parent/guardian is responsible for all conveyance arrangements, to include collecting and chaperoning their charges.  In all cases of extraordinary leave, it is essential that applicants provide authentic written documentation of all travel details.
    • The school reserves the right to decline any leave request which the Principal deems unwise, unsafe, improper or otherwise unacceptable.
    • Leave is not permitted to attend a sibling graduation ceremony during the academic term.

Please do not make requests for early release from school before a school break or late return after a school break unless it is an emergency situation.  I will not authorize any such requests.  It is very important that parents inform two weeks in advance of any requests for extraordinary leave.  No last minute requests for such leave will be entertained except in emergencies, and any unauthorized absences will be recorded as such in your child’s file. Repeated breach of the school leave policy is a very serious matter and may affect your child’s place at the school.

I would be very grateful if parents could avoid making any leave requests which are not in the spirit of the school rules.  Even a half-day leave request upsets the whole class dynamic and puts your child at an academic disadvantage.

Best wishes,

Dr Matthew Sullivan

Principal
